Dover Historic Gardens Research Project

Connaught Park in the late 1800s

As part of the Heritage Strategy, we have asked the Kent Gardens Trust (KGT) to research eighteen public parks and private gardens in the district.

This research project builds on a register of historic parks and gardens in Kent produced in 1996 (The Kent Gardens Compendium).

The KGT is a charity that protects Kent’s garden heritage for present and future generations. Trained volunteers from the KGT research the history and development of each garden by talking to the owners, using local libraries and museums to create an accurate history of these sites.

Connaught Park TodayKGT has carried out similar projects in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Thanet and Medway. This year they are celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown by producing a book titled ’Capability Brown in Kent’ and holding an event at Chilham Castle in August which includes a lunch and lectures on Brown's life and work.

For more information on the publication and event and all previous research and forthcoming events, visit the Kent Gardens Trust.
