Work has begun to transform council-owed land on Military Road in Dover into eight new affordable homes which will be let to local people at social rents.
DDC officially broke ground today (26 February) with representatives from the council, developer BEC Construction Ltd and JPN Projects Ltd.
The block will consist of six one-bed flats, one two-bed flat and one two-bed wheelchair accessible flat. Homes England is contributing funding towards the project.
The homes are being built by contractor BEC Construction to the highest environmental standards to help combat fuel poverty. They will be powered by air source heat pumps and have solar panels on the roof.
The Military Road development is the latest in a number of affordable home schemes in the district, including Napchester Road in Whitfield and Wingfield Place in Deal.
Cllr Pam Brivio, DDC’s cabinet member for housing, said: “This is an example of how we are breathing new life into vacant brownfield sites to bring much-needed affordable homes to the district.
“Our residents deserve a secure and affordable place to call home, and I can’t stress enough the positive and potentially lifechanging impact this has on a person’s life.
“It’s more important than ever that we continue to deliver more affordable homes to local people across the district.

What is affordable housing?
Affordable housing includes social and affordable rented homes, provided to eligible households whose needs are not met by the market.
It also includes shared ownership, which supports first-time buyers into home ownership.
There are different types of rent. Social rent is paid to registered providers or local authorities. It is low-cost and set by a government formula.
Affordable rent is rent that is set at up to 80% of market rent.
