More affordable homes for the Dover district

Dover District Council is set to purchase six new properties to add to its affordable housing stock following a decision by DDC’s cabinet members at a meeting last night (5 February).

The new homes are part of a planned 27-home development at the Old Malthouse in Easole Street, Nonington. The six affordable homes are expected to be completed and handed over to the council in August 2025.

Four of the homes will be let at affordable rent and two will be available for local families to buy through the shared ownership scheme.

The purchase of the six properties, which consist of four flats and two houses, forms part of the council’s commitment to increase the number of affordable homes in the district.

DDC aims to deliver 200 affordable homes a year through a mix of building and acquiring properties which are either already built or under construction. These will be available to local people through affordable rent, shared ownership or used as interim housing for people who find themselves unexpectedly homeless.

Cllr Pamela Brivio, Cabinet Member for Housing, Skills and Education, said: “We are determined to provide more affordable housing across the district at a time when the cost of living continues to bite.

“The purchase of these properties in Nonington is a good example of one of the ways in which we will do this.

“It’s not just about building homes ourselves but taking advantage of high-quality properties which are being constructed or already out there and ready for people to move in.”
