DDC Leader, Cllr Trevor Bartlett (second from left) is joined by Cllrs Oliver Richardson, Sue Chandler and Dan Friend to mark the start of the Guildhall Square revamp
Work to transform the Guildhall Square in Sandwich as a welcoming space for both residents and visitors is underway. Due to be completed in early summer, the historic town square will be resurfaced along with the installation of new features such as improved seating, tree planting and lighting.
The Thursday morning market will relocate for this phase of the works to the car park located behind the Guildhall (from Thursday 9 February). The new market site will be close to the original marketplace building.
The project is part-funded by The R&A as part of The Open Legacy Fund, together with investment from Kent County Council, Dover District Council, Sandwich Town Council, Prince’s Golf Club and Discovery Park.
Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Leader of Dover District Council, said: “The Guildhall Square is the hub of town centre life in Sandwich. We’re delighted to have started work on this exciting project to enhance the public realm, create better access and the potential for increased footfall.
“It will be an asset for staged events, local businesses, and the community and provide a safe, level and welcoming space for everyone’s use and enjoyment.”
Residents can keep updated on the project by signing up to Dover District Council’s ‘Keep Me Posted’ email bulletin service and visiting the Council’s website.
