A major £1m investment in street lighting is helping light the way for a brighter, safer and more environmentally friendly future - following works including the replacement of around 2,750 street light units with energy saving LEDs, and 200 lighting columns.
Dover District Council appointed contractor VolkerHighways to replace almost 2,750 street lights, including all of its ornate ‘heritage’ fittings, and work is now complete. The programme of works has also replaced more than 200 concrete columns in the district.
The Council projects a 70-80% energy saving as a result of the improvements. This investment has also included a long lasting coastal specification on each lamp, further supported by manufacturers offering a 15 year warranty.
This completes a major progamme of improvements on district-council street lighting. Street lighting in the district is split between those maintained by Kent County Council and those that come under Dover District Council.
DDC aims to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030 at the latest, and has committed to support the whole district to be carbon neutral by 2050. Greenhouse gas emissions have reduced by 57% since 2008/09.
Cllr Chris Vinson, DDC Cabinet Member for Climate Change said: “We are delighted to see the completion of this important project. These brighter, more efficient LED street lights will help people to feel safe at night, as well as helping to reduce light pollution, and will save energy, reducing our carbon footprint for the future.”
