The catch-of-the-day is back on the menu for local anglers with the re-opening of Deal Pier’s lower deck, one of the most popular local fishing venues.
Dover District Council, which owns the pier, recently completed over £63,000 worth of repairs to the lower deck following tidal surges and storm damage last year.
A comprehensive package of works has been undertaken to make the lower deck more resilient to the vagaries of the English Channel.
The pier’s concrete structure has been strengthened, and sections of damaged timber decking have been replaced with steel mesh through which high tides can flow. Handrails have also been replaced.
The works were undertaken by a local contractor, Aesir Construction from Eythorne.
Roger Walton, DDC's Strategic Director, said: “Angling remains the nation’s top pastime and Deal Pier is one of the most popular local fishing venues. Since 2018, we’ve invested over £1m in Deal Pier, including the opening of Deal Pier Kitchen.
“Deal Pier is certainly the 'plaice' to be for local anglers!”
