Dover District Council has allocated nearly £80,000 in funding to 81 different community and voluntary groups across the district as part of its popular Summer Community Grants Scheme.
The scheme encourages and supports community-led activities that result in a direct benefit for residents in the district.
Building on the success of previous years’ schemes, the Council increased the Annual Community Grant Scheme Fund to £115,000, for each of its summer and winter rounds, to help local community groups deliver projects in a Covid-safe way.
DDC is allocating a total budget of £230,000 for the Community Grants Scheme in 21/22, including £22.5k from Council budgets and an addition of £7.5k from the Dover District Lotto (for every pound spent on the Lotto, 60p goes back into the local community).
As we've been following the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, DDC recognises the immensely important role that local groups have played, and will continue to play, as the district slowly recovers.
Community groups who have benefitted from a summer grant this year include:
Deal – Talk it out (Mental Health Counselling)
Talk It Out are a mental health support group. They have been awarded £1,200, for six weekly counselling sessions led by a professional mental health counsellor, that specifically targets anxiety.
Dover – Bright Shadow (Dementia)
Bright Shadow aims to work in partnership in the district to bring about enhanced and sustainable services/activities for local people living with or affected by dementia. They have received £1,000 to provide 19 x 2-hour creative arts sessions.
Sandwich – Sandwich Pantry (Social Supermarket)
Sandwich Pantry is a project run by volunteers. It provides a service for local people experiencing economic hardship and food poverty by distributing high quality food waste from supermarkets that would otherwise go to landfill. The scheme has been awarded £750 for a community fridge.
Rural – 18th (Dover) Shepherdswell Scout Group (camping equipment)
The scouts have secured £2,000 towards tents and outdoor camping equipment to encourage young people to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.
Brin Hill, Head of Community and Digital Services, said: “As we reach step 4 of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, our community is looking forward to safely and slowly getting back to the clubs and activities they enjoy. Local groups play an invaluable role in offering our residents somewhere to go to meet friends, learn new skills and enhance their wellbeing and happiness.
“This money will offer much needed support to our community organisations, buying much needed resources and adapting where necessary in response to covid-19 guidance. We have seen an increased number of quality bids year on year which demonstrates the grant scheme’s success and the impact it has had across the district and we welcome the extra funding that the Dover Lotto continues to bring to our communities.”

- Community groups who benefit the local area can bid for grants from £100 up to £2,000.
- All grants are awarded through the framework of the Dover District Council Community Grant Scheme. The grant funds are allocated across five areas (Sandwich & Area, Deal and Walmer, Dover North, Dover Town and Dover West).
