DDC Celebrates National Tree Week

Native tree planting to create woodland walk at North Deal Recreation Ground

Dover District Council (DDC) is to plant over 100 new trees across the district as part of National Tree Week, the UK’s largest annual tree celebration.

North Deal Recreation Ground will see the majority of the planting with 100 new trees to create a new woodland walk of native trees, including Crab Apple, English Oak, Field Maple, Green Beech, Hazel, Hornbeam, Sessile Oak, Silver Birch, Small Leaf Lime, and Wild Cherry.

The trees have been provided through a carbon off-setting scheme with Eco Green Communities. They offset the manufacture of 25 eco dog waste bins installed across the district by DDC.   

A further 14 trees gifted to the district from The R&A following The 149^th Open at Royal St George’s have also been planted in Sandwich, and at the BeChange community garden in Aylesham and the Kearsney Parks in Dover.

Earlier this year, DDC planted 63 new fruit trees at Russell Gardens in Dover, including varieties of apple, pear and cherry and restoring the orchard that formed part of Thomas Mawson’s historic landscape.

Meanwhile at Kearsney Abbey a new mixed native hedge and a beech hedge are also being planted as part of the ongoing legacy of the National Lottery Heritage Fund project.

Cllr Oliver Richardson, DDC cabinet member for community and corporate property, said: “It’s always great to see new trees and hedgerows being planted to protect and enhance wildlife habitats in the district, and to enhance our public spaces.”
