Open Letter from the Leader of the Council

These have been truly unprecedented times for the district, the country and the whole world.

Despite the enormity of the challenge local communities across the district came together to support our most vulnerable residents, and continue to do so for those most in need.

We all owe them, and our NHS, care and frontline workers, an enormous debt of gratitude.

It is my sincere wish that we maintain the renewed sense of neighbourliness that has come to the fore during the pandemic.

As the government gradually eases the lockdown, we should all remember that with freedom comes responsibility.

This pandemic is not over yet.  We all need to stay alert, control the virus, and protect lives.

Adjusting to a new “normal” is going to take time, and a collective effort.

We’re all in this together.

So, as we get back to some of the everyday activities that we’ve longed for, let’s do so with a renewed sense of tolerance for each other and our local businesses as they work hard to open their doors whilst keeping us safe.

Let’s be guided first and foremost by looking after each other, respecting the continued need for social distancing and being a good neighbour.

Whilst it’s good to have some of our freedoms back, many people are still worried and struggling to cope.

Finally, I want to reassure you that the Council remains resilient and ready to help.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff, we’ve maintained core public services throughout the pandemic.

As we move into the recovery phase, we’re focussing our efforts on helping the local economy to recover.

It’s vital that we get back to business to protect local jobs.

We’ve set up a Business Hub to support local, independent traders by providing a single point of contact with the Council.

I want to thank the business community for the amazing ways in which they are innovating and introducing new measures so that they can welcome you back safely.

This gives us all confidence to do our bit by staying local and shopping local.

With more of us staying at home this summer, I would also encourage you to support our local visitor attractions.

Let’s work together to stay safe this summer.
