Councillors raise the Flag for Armed Forces Day 2020
Armed Forces Day is a chance for the nation to recognise and say thank you for the invaluable work of our armed forces. It’s an opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets.
This year, Armed Forces Day will take place on Saturday 27 June. Celebrations will begin today, Monday 22 June, when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.
The Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Mike Conolly, Leader of Dover District Council, Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Oliver Richardson and Cabinet member Cllr Nigel Collor have raised the flag at the council offices in Whitfield to show the district’s appreciation.
As a thank you to our Armed Forces community, Dover District Council, in partnership with the Dover District Armed Forces Covenant, has organised a virtual coffee morning. This will take place from 10am to 12 noon on Saturday 27 June using Teams.
An email invite will be sent out to DDC’s local Armed Forces network asking them to send in email addresses of those who wish to attend. All the information needed to access the meeting will be explained. For anyone else wishing to join, please email community@dover.gov.uk
DDC’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Oliver Richardson, said: “Due to the covid-19 restrictions, Dover District Council is pleased to be representing the district and celebrating Armed Forces Day this year. I, myself, am a veteran of the army, and I feel proud to now represent our Armed Forces at a local level. This year, DDC in partnership with the Dover District Armed Forces Covenant, would like to encourage forces veterans and their families to join in with our virtual coffee morning hosted online by DDC. It’s a chance to catch up with friends and comrades from the safety and comfort of their own homes.”
The Armed Forces Community Covenant is a voluntary pledge of mutual support between a civilian community and its local armed forces community. It is intended to complement, at a local level, the national Armed Forces Covenant, which outlines the mutual obligations between the Nation, the Government and the Armed Forces.
The Dover District Covenant was launched in 2013. Further information can be found at
