Are you Winter Ready?

The clocks have gone back, and with the arrival of cold, damp weather and darker evenings we must now get ready for the winter months ahead.

To help you get Winter Ready Dover District Council has pulled together a wide range of advice and useful partner links online at www.dover.gov.uk/winter-ready

Keeping warm and well

Keeping ourselves warm and healthy is essential. Getting a flu jab for you and your family is more important than ever, and make sure your medicine cabinet is fully stocked. Repeat prescriptions can be set up for home delivery and now is the time to familiarise yourself with all the relevant contact numbers for your local health services. Make sure you are taking advantage of the grant schemes available to keep your home warm.

Preparing for winter weather

Severe weather conditions can impact our daily lives. The news channels, Met Office and Environment Agency give the most up-to-date weather forecasts and flood warnings, as well as clear advice on what to do in an emergency. There are useful links to these services as well as council information regarding what to do and who to contact.

Think before you travel by car this winter. By planning ahead and checking the weather forecast, as well as stocking up on essentials before you travel, you will be prepared for any eventuality. Getting your car ready for winter journeys is a must.

Looking out for vulnerable family and neighbours

Finally, please remember to look out for older relatives and neighbours who may be feeling more vulnerable than usual. A phone call doesn’t take long and means a lot to those who find it harder to get out and about as they usually would.

Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Leader of the Council, said: “Now that winter is approaching, we have compiled a useful web page to share important information with our residents to help them through the winter. Our community has shown true spirit and resilience over the last year as we have tackled the pandemic together, and I would like to reiterate to all of our residents, that we will continue to work closely with our partners to support you”.

Dover District Council’s staff have worked throughout the pandemic to make sure that the district’s residents have what they need.
