An innovative forum to help pupils get involved in local democracy continues to move forward - with a meeting of the Dover District School Council today giving pupils the chance to meet Dover District Councillors and take a tour around the District Council offices.
The School Council meetings were relaunched in October 2018 and continue to grow, with two new schools attending in the past few months. The School Council is run by the headteacher at St Richard’s Catholic Primary School and facilitated by DDC’s Community Services team, working with local schools and community groups.
School Council meetings are held in the Council Chamber at Dover District Council, with the pupils choosing the agenda and speakers.
Recent topics have included homelessness, community safety and the environment. As part of their consideration of the environment, the young people were actively involved in a beach clean using DDC’s Community Caretakers Scheme.
The pupils on the School Council are aged between 7 and 12, with pupils currently attending from Green Park Community Primary School, Charlton Church of England Primary School, Langdon Primary School, St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, and Ash Cartwright and Kelsey Church of England Primary School.
Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Mike Conolly, said: “It was a great pleasure to meet delegates of the School Council, and to show them around the DDC offices. It is vital that we continue to listen and give an active voice to young people in the district and the School Council is a great way to help us achieve that.”
