Community housing schemes and self-builds have a key role to play in addressing the country’s housing shortage so Dover District Council its hosting its first ever Community and Self-Build Housing Conference at Discovery Park on Thursday, 28 June 2018 from 1.30pm to 5pm. Community groups and people taking the first steps to building their own homes can take part in a programme of speaker events, workshops, and networking with exhibitors designed to offer practical information and advice.
Dover District Council is one of 150 local authorities with funding from the Community Housing Fund. Alongside promoting community and self-build housing, DDC is also looking to award Community Housing Grants up to £100,000 over the next two years to help get local community housing projects off the ground. Dover District Council already has 150 people on its self-build register.
The keynote address at the conference will be given by Mario Wolfe of the National Custom & Self Build Association. Mario is on secondment from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government where, as senior housing policy advisor to the Minister of State for Housing and Planning, he led the Government’s custom build homes programme.
Cllr Pauline Beresford, DDC Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Community housing schemes and self-builds have an important part to play in addressing the housing shortage. But getting started can be daunting.
“We’re bringing together leading industry experts along with a wide range of exhibitors to offer practical advice and guidance, whether you’re looking for help in setting up a community housing group, or an architect to help you design your dream home.”
