On 11 November 2018, the nation will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War – communities across Dover District are invited to get involved, and to contact the council to help us to help you, and have a chance to receive a ‘There But Not There’ transparent silhouette.
Battle’s Over is a unique series of events involving organisations and communities nationwide to remember the sacrifice of millions of men and women during World War One. DDC is asking people to register their Battle’s Over events, which means you will be included in the list of events on the Battle's Over page on the DDC website, helping us to pull events together and promote them across the district.
Groups holding Battle’s Over events will also have the chance to be sent a ‘Chair Silhouette’. Awarded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, the Chair Silhouettes are 3ft transparent figures created to celebrate 100 years of remembrance, as part of the There But Not There project.
The silhouettes are being allocated by DDC Community Services to groups across the district to be included in events. Please be advised, we do require the silhouette back after your event as they will be donated to charity.
Battle’s Over is inviting local groups and organisations everywhere to get involved in a range of events, including:
- 6.00am – Individual bagpipers will play ‘Battle’s O’er’
- 6.55pm - Buglers will play the Last Post at Beacon sites around the country
- 7.00pm – Beacons of Light will be lit throughout the UK
- 7.05pm – Bells in churches and cathedrals will ring out.
As part of #Armistice100, people are also being encouraged to ring bells as they did 100 years ago when news of the Armistice spread. The Government is encouraging bells to ring out at 12.30pm on Sunday 11 November. For more information on Armistice100, please the Armistice100 website.
Dover District Council is working to help communities and promote local events. For more information on There But Not There silhouettes, please see the There But Not There website.
