Waste and Recycling

Read this page

As a society we are using up natural resources at an alarming rate. If every country used up natural resources at the rate the UK does, we would need three planets to live on!

(WWF - www.wwf.org.uk/oneplanet/ophome.asp)

Each year we generate about 100 million tonnes of waste from households and businesses. Most of this ends up in landfill where items such as food, paper and garden waste break down and produce methane (a harmful greenhouse gas), at the same time valuable energy is used in making new products from raw materials.

One part of cutting down on our waste is to reuse items or recycle our waste that may otherwise end up in landfill. Energy can also be recovered from waste, leaving just a small amount to go into landfill where necessary.

Every day we throw away things such as empty cans, kitchen scraps and packaging. A large proportion of the average dustbin could be recovered and reused, recycled or not bought at all.

Dover District Council operates a fortnightly kerbside recycling collection of paper, cans, glass and green waste - to find out more about these services please click on the following links:

Additional items can also be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling centres
