The Council has a wide and varied strategic housing responsibility and the Housing Strategy 2005-2009 has been developed in consultation with members of the local community, and partners within the housing, health and social care sectors. It is based on a detailed assessment of current and future housing need within the district and also reflects key priorities that have been identified within national, regional and sub-regional housing policy.
Good quality accessible housing is a fundamental requirement for a prosperous and thriving community and the Council recognises the challenges it faces in providing the quantity and quality of housing that local people need. This strategy sets out an ambitious vision, which will contribute to meeting the wider aspirations that the Council has for the community.
The Council recognises that resources for housing are scarce, and that there are many competing demands on its limited finances. The Housing Strategy provides an opportunity for the Council to prioritise scarce resources, and it will be used as a key document to lobby for additional resources for the district.
